We advise that you book your session in advance, based on your due date. Once this is booked your portrait session is flexible and it can be confirmed at a later date. You can call from the hospital or once you are at home and relaxed.
Don’t delay because that “brand new” look of your baby changes so much throughout the first year. Like many of my clients you will want to book in with our “blessings plan” which offers sessions throughout the year so you can remember those changes.
Your session should be booked at a time that you feel your baby is most content, usually when they are due to have a nice long sleep is best.Taking care of yourself can be difficult when a new baby arrives.
Don’t be shy to accept help from friends and family so you can get pampered up before your session. Details like grooming your hands are a good idea as your hands will play an important part in newborn portraits.
This goes for Dad too if he is participating in the session, a manicure may be stretching it but clean hands and moisturiser on any dry skin would be great.Makeup should be applied as you normally wear it and it is a good idea to bring a hair brush or comb and makeup for any touch ups.
One hour before the session please remove any elasticated clothing from your baby like socks. If you would like some semi nude portraits with your baby, holding your baby against you please remove any clothing that will leave lines on your skin.
We recommend one outfit only to be worn at the newborn baby session as clothing changes can upset them. We really want to capture the beautiful skin and folds so the baby will be nude for the majority of the shoot.
We often use Mum and Dad as a background to hold baby, and for this, we’ll need you both to be wearing a black top. Also have an outfit change ready as well, something light and airy that will give mum a softer feel.
For Mums we recommend a cotton camisole and long or short sleeve black knit tops. Jeans or other comfortable pants or skirts are great. For Dads, we suggest they do NOT wear button down shirts but a simple cotton style long or short sleeve top is best.
They should also have a plain white t- shirt. Avoid any logos or writing on clothing and watches as this is distracting. Please make sure that clothes are wrinkle free as they do show in photographs. If your baby is asleep when you arrive that is fantastic! Please do not try to wake baby up, sleeping is the best way to photograph babies at this age as their eyes are not yet focusing, can get crossed when open and they cannot hold their head up and make expressions yet.
If baby does wake up it is no stress we can keep photographing then too.We will make sure that the studio is a comfortable temperature so that baby is happy. If we need to break to comfort or feed baby that is cool because we factor extra time into baby sessions.
Please bring along the essentials like a favourite blanket, wipes and nappies just in case.We will take care of everything else on hand at the studio, we have great simple props, beautiful materials and quirky ideas to make your baby portraits unique artworks.

Newborn portraits are different to any other portraits your new baby will ever have. Photographing a newborn baby in the first two weeks of life will capture the newness, the squishy folds, the beautiful sleepy face and the scale of the newborn baby’s body. These are treasures that you will love and enjoy for the rest of your life.
