Where are all the babies? I have seriously been so busy with families and children lately that I haven’t posted any teeny tiny babies lately. And they are my favorite! I am lucky enough that I get to photograph the teeniest of the tiniest on a daily basis. This is Jarvis, he is only one day old. This was an in-hospital session, were ALL of the photographs were taken right in the hospital room. Little man was so clam and oh so happy to be in mama’s arms. It was really beautiful.

Come visit me at the Farmington Festival and enter to win one of several prizes.

I will guide you smoothly through the maternity photography process, but here are a couple of pointers to keep in mind for the shoot.

Capturing even those sweet little moments of mama soothing her babe is what these newborn sessions are all about.  Little Audrey is a natural model and even gave us a sweet sleep smile for the camera.

With the help of my 4 year old, I am excited to announce the winners from our Farmington Festival Drawing! There was no exact science to this, I just put all the names into a bowl and added additional name for those that took measures for more chances and mixed them all up. This is the order she drew them out…

When planning your maternity photography session, its best to try and schedule the shoot between week thirty-one (31) and thirty-six(36). If this is not convenient it’s wise to keep me constantly updated with your plans so that we can set the shoot up on  short notice. You don’t want to lose the optimal window of opportunity! Maternity photography sessions are not easily re-scheduled if missed due to the nature of birth.

Deciding on clothing is an important part of the maternity photography planning process. I suggest a casual outfit and a cute dressy outfit. Mothers who want to pose topless or nude are able to do so in the comfort of your home or a secluded location. Draping material or wraps are also another choice as far as clothing. Draping allows for exposed bellies, but can still be modest, or not 😉

With maternity photography, props can add significantly to the overall feel of the images or they can distract. Toys, items of clothing, baby furniture and accessories all make great additions to the session. If you want more of a lifestyle session then most likely you’ll forgo the usual props so that main focus is on you.

This handsome man is turning two! He’s got loads of personality and it was great to capture some of it on camera. With dimples like these, this kid is gonna be a serious heartbreaker. Happy birthday, buddy.

Good points to consider and keep in mind when preparing for maternity portraits:

I love it when clients incorporate a couple things they really love in their photos, it makes for a really personalized and unique session.

This is Ellie and her big sister Addy. As you can see they get there beautiful looks and gorgeous blue eyes from their mama. In true girl fashion there was a little bit of drama the first go round of trying to capture these two together. Round two was perfect and the girls really liked getting the photo taken. Thanks Addy for being a big help with your baby sister.

One year olds are so active and playful their personality really shines through and Mila has loads of it!  Little Mila-Minnie-Mouse showed off her smile and a little Disney love at her first birthday photo shoot.

The birth of baby is a wonderful life changing event. Maternity photography is an ideal way to capture the magical period of time before that momentous event. Maternity portraits are a great addition to any baby album and parents should try to include at least one set in the chronicle of their baby’s life.

You and I will discuss the overall style of the maternity session thoroughly in the initial stages of planning. This normally happens during your pre-consultation. Points such as photographic style, props, clothing and details should be decided early in the process. We are going to have a fun maternity photography shoot. You can relax and really enjoy the session and know that your memories of being pregnant are being captured.

Sisters sisters are so much fun, sisters sisters aren’t you glad you only have one!

This. Little. Boy. I tried not to overload this blog post, and instagram and facebook with pictures from our newborn session but he’s just the best little baby model (and it’s not just his full head of hair).

I will try to arrive a few minutes before the session starts to look around and find the best light in the home.

Dos and Don’ts Try and avoid wearing clothes with elastic seams as they leave marks on the skin. Avoid trying any new funky hairstyles before your session. Avoid using oily lotions on your skin prior to the shoot.

They tend to reflect flash and fill lighting and can spoil shots. Try and have a manicure prior to the shoot as your hands are often the focal point of many of the photos. Lip gloss or chap stick makes a big difference in close up head and shoulder shots.

Make arrangements to contain pets during the shoot. Get daddy to join you in a few photos. Relax, have fun and trust me!

You should have an email from me explaining what happens next.

A beautiful mama and a sweet baby girl is just a recipe for too many photos to post them all.  Yes, believe it or not, these are just a few favorites from this studio session.

Working with babies and newborns takes time, patience and a lot of humor but this little looker was a photographer’s dream.

There are usually two locations chosen for my maternity photography; outside (as I am a natural light photographer) on location or in-home.

The more commonly chosen setting is the home as it lends a far more intimate and familiar feeling. Just be sure that your that the home is prepared for the upcoming shoot. Make sure the baby’s room is set up as well. I will most likely want to take a few shoots in the babies room as well as throughout the home.

Newborn photography can be exceptionally challenging , not solely as a result of the fashions can are usually a little uncooperative, but also because of the reality they spend quite a lot of time sleeping and very little time smiling. This article has a couple of hints and tips that should hopefully show you find out how to photograph newborn babies and make sure that you find yourself with a shot that the family will wish to treasure forever.

The lighting of your shot will be especially important. You do not want to go exposing newborn eyes to bright flash bulbs, so try and take photographs in conditions which might be naturally bright when photographing newborns. Enhance the ISO and publicity compensation on your digicam in low mild ranges , but examine to guantee that the picture doesn`t grow to be too grainy as a result.

Be sure you consider the angles at which you are taking your shots. It can be very easy to fall into the behavior of at all times capturing from above, so before lengthy you could have an album filled with pictures wanting down on the child. Attempt getting down on the identical degree as the newborn, and allow them to fill the complete frame of your photo.

Focus on a number of the smaller features of their face, or on a single hand or foot to get some actually interesting macro shots. It is often an concept to keep your digicam on a continuous taking pictures mode, as a baby `s expression can change incredibly quickly. Take quite a lot of shots for each setup, and hopefully you may be left with one good one. Digital photography allows you delete any undesirable shots.

Do not forget that these photos are being taken to capture the second and to look again on in years to come. Consider what pictures and memories you need to preserve. If there may be any merchandise or toy that performs an essential part of their early days, seize it. The family shot is all the time a favorite ; so make sure you get certainly one of both mum and dad with the baby. Another traditional shots to think about are ones with the infant `s hand or foot in its mother `s hand to emphasize the difference in dimension , or pictures of the mom nursing seize the intimacy of the relationship.

By following these newborn photography ideas you will be able to improve your photography skills and find yourself with pictures price wanting back on many years from now.
