There have been A LOT of articles written about natural light verses artificial light.  I’m not going to go into which is better and why because quite simply it should be what you’re comfortable using plus it always ends up in a debate and I’m way too busy for that 😉

. I am excited to release my NEW Facebook Banner Templates for just $10. http://blog.littlepiecesphotography.com.au/shop/ It is so important to stand out and make a great first impression and with so many clients now using Facebook as their “go to” business directory getting their attention is important. I have put together 10 unique photoshop templates […]

I will always love natural light and will continue to use it in my home studio but I’m so happy to have found a light that I can travel with that will allow me create beautiful soft light in any environment.  The results are so similar to shooting with my large window.  And I have to admit I love the little catchlight in his eye from the Soft Ball.

Lightroom is not something that I use all the time but when it comes to quickly adding some final touches to an image it is a go-to for a lot of people.  So I have created Black and White Lightroom Presets and they are now available in the shop. This set will help you create […]

When you ask people what they would rescue from their burning house, the most common answer is “family photographs”. When people panic, they would rather grab photos than valuable jewellery or technology. This is a powerful force which tells us more about the role of family photography in our lives. We have a constant desire to distil our most precious moments into images.

Photography allows us to preserve these memories for the days we may not remember, or when we can no longer remember.

I used large black sheets to block out the natural light for the Jinbei image and then turned the light off and pulled the black sheets down to use the window light.  You don’t have to block out the windows as this light would also make a great fill light on low light days or for other similar scenarios.  I just wanted to show the results using it on it’s own – the same way I would a window 🙂

And, especially for portraits, these visual documents of a moment in time become ever more valuable as time goes by.

NATURAL LIGHT – Large windows to the right filtered with sheer curtains.

Anyway enough about my adventures 🙂 the real reason for this post is to share some photos of my brand new Brisbane Newborn Photography Studio. My husband and I have been planning this space for the past 3 years and it was finally completed 2 weeks ago – making ME the happiest baby photographer around!

2014 has definitely been the biggest year for Little Pieces Photography!  I have put a small video together of all the highlights and babies I have had the privilege to take photos of using my favourite slideshow company Animoto along with beautiful music from Triple Scoop Music.

I don’t often share my personal work or award photographs but recently I presented a class at The Portrait Masters in Palm Springs about finding my inspiration and bringing it to life. It was the first time I have presented on this topic and I absolutely loved it so thought I would share my opening video here.

Over the years I have used both flash and natural light and have always preferred to use natural.  I’m just not a fan of large bursts of light on a newborn that could potentially cause a startling effect or you know yourself when a flash goes off in your face that your eyes take a little while to adjust afterwards.  And then there are the parents who are trying to relax in the calm environment that I have created – I want them to be able to sit and enjoy watching the session without the impact of light every few minutes. But hey that’s me personally.

My studio is filled with amazing natural light, I have large sliding doors that are north east facing and I filter the light with sheer curtains to make it beautiful and soft for my baby photography.  But when I travel for work I don’t often have the luxury of natural light which is why I have purchased the Jinbei EF 200 watt sunlight LED with the 50cm soft ball diffuser which is a continuous daylight balanced light.  I can set up during a session the exact same way I would with a window.

When clients come into my home studio the majority of the time they have no idea what is involved in a newborn photography session.  And I just love seeing their expressions while I’m posing and taking photos of their baby.  So I wanted to share with you a short video of some behind the scenes footage from a recent session.  You will see the attention to detail and the care that I take throughout every session.

Most people know me as a newborn photographer, but since moving into my new Brisbane photography studio, I am branching into family photography more and more.

It’s hard to believe I’m writing this post while I’m in Daugu, Korea 🙂  Feeling very grateful for the opportunities to travel to the most amazing countries I have only dreamed of.   I am speaking at a 4 day photography conference for the Professional Photographers of Korea.  They have been so kind, and they are the most hospitable group of people I have met – plus a heap of  fun!

When was the last time you were photographed with your family? I am truly enjoying capturing the love of a family. I would love to hear from you if you are interested in having your family captured, just as the family below did. You can find out more about a portrait photography session on my website.

A few more details about the Jinbei EF 200 –  it’s a 200watt light which equates too a 2K output in Tungsten. Unlike tungsten it is daylight balanced and extremely bright , you also have the ability to control the output from the camera with the optional transmitter. The light does NOT overheat because of its unique built in silent fan system, which is it’s best feature if you are shooting Video like I do as there is no noise. No other LED monbloc currently has this quiet fan. The Soft Light Ball is available in 30cm and 50cm and both give unique soft direct light as well as reflected.

And my stunning hand painted backdrop was created by Conny Rogers who has just started offering them to photographers.  The two canvas prints hanging on the wall are printed by Brilliant Prints.

It certainly was incredible year!!!  139 Newborn Babies Photographed, 23 Photographers privately mentored, 19 newborn posing classes in 12 countries to 193 photographers and 3 photography conferences!  Oh and a few new trophies along the way as well 😀  Winning the AIPP Australian Family Photographer of the Year 2014 is the biggest honour!    I have so much gratitude for the opportunities and the support I have received over the past few years – it’s unbelievable!!!  Thank you my beautiful clients that trust me with their baby photography and to all the wonderful photographers that I have met and most importantly my incredible family for putting up with me.

Photographs can grab our attention and speak directly to our emotions. Our images can express joy and sorrow, wonder and sympathy. Every human emotion can find a place in photography. As a portrait photographer, this art form has given me a voice to express feelings when I cannot find words. It has allowed me to develop a visual language for some of the most difficult life situations and emotions.

I wish you all a year filled with adventure, embraced opportunities and endless love and laughter.

Some of these images are very personal and have great meaning behind them. They will give you feelings of joy, sadness, confusion and uncomfortableness. For me my creativity has grown out of every day experiences, challenges, limitations and loss. I truly believe we need to embrace these for our creativity to flourish.

I purchased mine from Protog and Tony Holden was more then helpful in finding the perfect light set up for my needs.  If you have any questions you can drop him an email tony@protog.com.au or checkout their website – http://www.protog.com.au/buy/jinbei-monoblock-style-ef-200-watt-sun-light-led-5/JBEF200

The couple in the video below were last photographed together 11 years ago, on their wedding day. Their children will cherish these images for many years to come. Photographs manifest emotions that words cannot. These are so important to your loved ones, and especially when those moments are no longer fresh in our minds.

These photographs outlive us, they last for generations.  They matter because they freeze moments of our lives which pass unremarkably and which seem to have little importance to us at the time. The significance, however, may be for others who search for the person we once were or the places we once knew. Like jigsaw pieces that complete the larger picture of our lives, these photographs are what tell our stories long after we are gone.

More fun filming in the studio today. I was lucky enough to photograph little Max a couple of years ago as a newborn so couldn’t wait to meet his baby sister today and see the beautiful boy he has grown into! While I was editing this photo earlier I thought – Max is just two & half, he will never remember cuddling his brand new baby sister Amelia! And then I started to wonder where will photos like this be in around 60 years when these beautiful babies have families of their own and I’m pushing 100! If I’m lucky!!!

My very talented Husband designed and created the shelving unit for all of my newborn props – which couldn’t be more perfect!  😀  He has done an incredible job putting the whole studio together – and with a little help from of our good friend Garrett.

After posting a picture on social media of my new light I had a few requests from photographers wanting to see some resulting images.  So I thought I would share with you some photos of this handsome little man using both light sources to show you the results.  I have also included pull back shots of both set ups.

Photography is a huge part of our history. For the past 200 years it has captured the history of the world and of families. It has given us a glimpse of the past, whilst preserving our family and cultural histories. People or events that photographed now will perhaps never be the same again, so taking advantage of any opportunities to take photos allows for the remembrance of things as they once were.
