First of all, I hope you all are ready for this CUTENESS OVERLOAD.
Due to the timing of the event, we had to schedule the photo session at 12:00pm – right in the middle of the day. Amy expressed that she wanted some greenery in the photos, rather than the October fall “feel”. After scouting a few locations, we agreed that Balboa Park would be the best spot for our photo session. Now…for all my photographers out there, you know that shooting in the middle of the day, with the super harsh sun, minimal shade, along with tons of people at Balboa Park on a Saturday can feel like quite a challenge. But I want to share a few tips for those who are shooting in these circumstances and how to make sure you leave with beautiful images for your clients!
Now, let’s get back to the cuteness of this photo session. Christian is such a handsome little guy and he was so great in front of the camera! Amy & Sanders were also a huge help, making silly noises and dancing in the background while I snapped some priceless images of his big, beautiful smile. They even brought the perfect little cake for Christian’s cake smash photos, balloons and bubbles. And I won’t even go into how adorable he looked in his little suite and bowtie. We headed to their church right after the portrait session for the birthday party. It was an intimate group of family and friends that showered Christian with love, hugs and kisses. Some of my favorite photos are the photos of the “Doljabi”, which is a Korean tradition where you put out a few “career” items and you let the baby crawl and pick one up. It’s supposed to mean what they’re going to be when they grow up! Christian chose the microphone & the football. Maybe a singer/ entertainer/ professional athlete in the future? Awesome!
If your baby is sick, just had vaccines, or is teething I highly recommend rescheduling the session until the baby feels better.
This type of photo shoot has been very popular here in America for quite awhile, and it has become a huge trend worldwide. Smash Cake photo sessions are now one of the most “must haves” children’s photos of all times when it comes to creative photo shoots, and every mommy wants to have cute images to remember this super cute time of their babies lives.
Now let’s have some fun and let the excitement take you to a wonderful messy journey!
1. Take the time to scout your locations in advance (ideally at the exact time of day the shoot will be held). Don’t leave it up to the day of the event/photo session to show up and scramble to find a good spot. Doing the work ahead of time will ensure you give your clients the highest quality photos because you’ve already chosen the best location for the light and settings.

Smash cake photos aren’t limited to first birthdays. We have photographed Smash Cake photo sessions of children who are celebrating their 5th birthday.
They’re also a great option for those who aren’t planning on having a birthday party but wish to have cute pictures of this very special milestone.
Please note that not all babies love the cake or it’s texture. In order to help your baby to be prepared for a Smash Cake session is to let them try cake or a cupcake of similar frosting ahead of time. Babies are often hesitant to try new tastes and textures, and this is one way to help them become familiar with it ahead of time.
We have the great pleasure to offer the ultimate, creative, messy and fun experience of all, known as “Smash Cake Photo Sessions” – a professional photo session that focuses on the child’s first interaction with a birthday cake, usually done around the baby’s first birthday where super cute Smash Cake Photos are created.
Some parents need the photos for the birthday party invitation, so I recommend the photo session to be done no later than 11 months.
3. This is an obvious one, but I’m not a fan of photo bombers! 😉 If you have people walking in the background of your image, it will look distracting and less professional. But how in the world are you going to find an empty spot at Balboa Park on a Saturday!? You have to be a little strategic about this. A lot of the obvious attractions (like outside of museums, water fountains and rose gardens) will be where everyone is gathered around. So when I was scouting for a location, I found a little area in the very back of the rose garden that had a large patch of grass and was completely empty because there really wasn’t much to see over there. However, it was the PERFECT spot for our photos!! The shade was even, I got little pops of color from the roses in the background and nobody was walking behind the family. Success!

For the children’s first birthday, in most cases, it’s their first contact with sugar. It’s also the first time they’re really allowed to do whatever they want with a cake. Most babies love it. But others not so much… Remember, each child has its own special personality and behave differently against new discoveries. What I mean, is that each photo session can be a box full of surprises, and sometimes it is very common for some children to cry or to get scared by touching the cake, or not even want to get close to it (as another example, when they first get in contact with beach sand or the park’s grass, they may not like the texture).
Red Frosting. Mixed with drool can begin to look like blood. Frozen cakes. They are too cold and babies will be scared to touch it. Fondant. It is very difficult for the baby to break into the cake. Berries. They will stain their cute outfits and everything around them. If you don’t mind, we don’t mind! Chocolate cake and Chocolate frosting. Chocolate looks like dirt on their little faces.
Amy and Sanders reached out to me a few months ago to set up a fun family photo session. Her son, Christian was going to turn one year old and they wanted to capture this special time as their little one was growing up way too fast (most parents know the feeling!). She also wanted to do a few cute cake smash photos near the end! But, we couldn’t get too messy because right after the shoot, we would head to Christian’s 1st birthday party to celebrate with friends and family. What a fun day!!
How about a Taco Tuesday Smash? Maybe a stack of organic pancakes? Or even a huge bowl of fruit? what about a watermelon fruit smash? Or a big plate of pasta? Let them have Cake and Smash it too!
They had a slideshow playing in the background of the party, including adorable baby pictures and videos of Christian. One of the slides had a verse on it which said: “Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:3-4. What a perfect verse to pray over your child. I wish many blessings to Christian and his family!
If you decide to schedule a Cake Smash Photo Session, we also suggest bringing a spare of clothes for the baby to change and a towel for cleaning up afterwards. We will have plenty of baby wipes for you to use. When you are ready to book your session, please contact us. I suggest booking a coupe months is advance if possible.

The client is responsible for ordering and bringing the cake. I would love to be able to provide this for my clients, but due to possible food allergens etc, it is, unfortunately, a liability for me, so I have the parents bring the cake. We suggest buying a small 6″ to 8” cake from any bakery/grocery store. Regular frosting is best and you can pick a color to match the theme. If you have a specific theme in mind let us know so we can coordinate the colors with the outfit and the cake!
A Smash Cake Photo Session usually lasts between 30 minutes to 1 hour and includes images of the child before introducing the cake, with the scenario all set up. That, not only guarantees the parents receive a good amount of pictures to choose from, but also helps the child to get used to the environment before all the action starts. As soon as the child is comfortable and happy in the scene, the cake is introduced.
The best thing to do is to schedule your session when baby is the happiest. Be cautious of nap and feeding times, as grumpy and hungry babies will not cooperate. A lot of customers have found that after morning naps or right after lunch to be the best time.
We can schedule a Smash Cake Session around the child’s first birthday, when the baby is between 11-13 months.
This blog is overdue! I first met Colbie when she was still inside her mommy when we did a beautiful beach maternity session in La Jolla over a year ago with her daddy and big brother. Then a few months later I got to meet this precious girl for her newborn photos. Six months later we did a special shoot using her daddy’s firefighter hat and boots and did some nice shots in his uniform. Coincidentally the day we scheduled Colbie’s one year photos, the wildfires had broken out all over San Diego. Colbie and her mom were here with me taking photos because dad had been called away to work on one of the fires. Although we pulled together a super adorable session of Colbie the whole hour was overshadowed with worry of the nearby fires and if her dad was ok. It took a few days for the fires to be contained and her dad went without sleep for a few days while working around the clock. Thank God for men like her daddy Eric that protect us for horrible things like fires. Colbie is a lucky girl! And definitely one of the cutest one year olds I know!
We will plan and supply the cutest scenario for you session! Smash Cake sessions can take place indoors or outdoors. We will suggest outfits and the perfect cake to go along with the selected scenario and everything else that will compose the scene, this way each client gets a custom session in studio or at the location of their choice.
Some customers put their babies in just a diaper cover with a birthday hat/headband, others dress the baby with a tutu, and some have a full custom made outfit they have ordered. It’s all personal preference. Just keep in mind it will get messy. If they are in a tutu/skirt/dress, please be sure to put a diaper cover on so we don’t see the diaper.
For girls: cute party dresses, lacy panties or a tutu skirt with diaper cover; For boys: shorts or cute diaper cover, cargo or dressy pants, bowtie and even a little shoulder strap.
2. Look for an area with open EVEN shade. This can be tricky in the middle of the day. There are a lot of locations at Balboa Park that had shade from trees but that were very uneven and showed “hot spots” from the sun shining through the trees. I always look for areas with even shade AND large amounts of shade. If you’re photographing a subject in shade but the background is a bright, unshaded area, it will look very blown out and you won’t be able to see any detail behind your subject.
